A Week in the News - 19th July 2013

Friday 19th of July 2013  |  Category: Pregnancy News  |  Written by:

The news this week has been dominated by the weather, and whilst it is a typically British thing to do, it's hard to complain really...isn't it? It's only supposed to get hotter next week, although the rumours amongst the weather community are suggesting that storms will take hold by the end of the week - so back to the typical summer! As I write this England are battering Australia in the cricket which is another great start to the weekend. We still haven't heard anything about the royal baby, although we will focus on that a bit later on.

Lets have a look at the news this week and see what caught our eye, whilst the royal baby is continuing to dominate the headlines, there have been other things in the press!

Stress, Rest, Bodies and Looks

According to the Daily Mail your body might be making your child prone to depression. If your placenta hasn't developed protection against stress hormones then your baby will feel stressed as well, and this could change the way the brain develops. I'm sure there is a bit of science behind this claim, but I'm sure there are far more aspects into the development of depression - rather than the fact that your mother might not have had the right kind of placenta. Yet more sensationalism from the Mail.

The Telegraph are also reminding pregnant women that bed rest might not necessarily be for the best. In fact it is suggested that those who are advised to 'bed rest' may be more likely to deliver their baby pre-term. That being said, I'm sure most of us know whether or not we need to go to bed to rest.

The society that we live in today is dominated by who people look, whilst this is a sad state of affairs unfortunately that is the way of the world. This has meant that some women do not want to show their body after giving birth, but as reported on the BBC, one photographer is trying to change that. A man talking about women's body image is dangerous ground, but this seems like a good thing to me! Unfortunately the Mail have discovered that a fifth of new parents think their baby is ugly. Is this really the case?

The Royal Baby

The royal baby is still yet to arrive but that hasn't meant that the news has forgot about it. Everyone has seen the pictures of the press camped outside the hospital that Kate is apparently going to give birth in, although the Telegraph think they might have picked the wrong one! It could be possible that Kate gives birth in Reading, nearer to her parents home, that would have the press cursing!

An interesting blog from Beverley Turner looks at the chance Kate has of having a natural birth rather than a caesarian, as someone who hasn't been in this situation with my partner it's hard to have an opinion on the prevalence of c-sections. Beverley is clearly very passionate on this subject, and it's always good to look into such things. Hopefully Kate has no difficulties and has the experience that she wants. And if you want to do focus on something slightly less serious why not try this Royal baby quiz.

See you again next week, with news of the royal baby - surely? If you see anything that catches your eye let us know via the site or through our Twitter account @MumNetwork.
