A Week in the News - 26th July 2013

Friday 26th of July 2013  |  Category: Pregnancy News  |  Written by:

For the first time since we started "A Week in the News" the news has actually been dominated by a story that we can focus on, of course we mean the royal birth. Not only that but Britain has had more reasons to moan about the weather as the hot temperatures have continued, although it has been stormy this week. So clearly this week we're going to focus our attentions on the royal baby, with our congratulations going to both William and of course Kate on the birth of their baby boy.

Our Future King

We were awoken on Monday morning by the news that the Duchess of Cambridge had gone into labour, and was expecting to give birth (some had suggested that she was actually induced but no one has any proof of that). The world was awaiting news all day, but it wasn't until around 7pm until we all heard the news we wanted to hear. The Duchess had given birth to a baby boy, and he was fit and well.

The birth of a direct heir to throne is a massive event, and whilst some people were less than impressed with the coverage it received, it's undoubted that many were delighted to see a royal baby born. It was reported differently across the papers, in fact the Guardian gave you the option of turning their site 'Republican' and removing all mention of the birth! Soon enough the new parents were looking to leave hospital and were duly praising the hospital staff for all their efforts. When the world first saw the baby, the press and hundreds of well wishers were there to experience the moment as the Duke and Duchess presented their baby to the everyone.

Clearly this is a big event, and whilst we didn't discover the baby's name until the day after, George Alexander Louis, many had predicted that George would infact be the baby's name, including us! George is going to have a life completely different to all of us, and we wish him and his parents well, can you imagine that first discussion when he is told, "one day, you'll be King!"

In Other News

It's important to remember that there have been other stories this week! The BBC reported on the story that Brazil is facing a new generation of Thalidomide babies, due to it's use as a treatment for leprosy and skin diseases. Unfortunately it seems that this will be a hard thing to change in Brazil with the drug being widely available, it's sad that such things can happen. The Telegraph also reported on the story that babies born in the South of England can live up to nine years longer than those born in the North. A shocking statistic provided by the ONS, although according to them it's because healthly people choose to move South?

We'll see you next week with another round up, and if you see something that catches your eye, contact us via the site or through our Twitter account @MumNetwork. See you next week.
