Why The Obsession With Celeb Pregnancies?

Monday 15th of April 2013  |  Category: Pregnancy News  |  Written by:

The announcement of a new celebrity pregnancy is almost always front page news on gossip magazines, which dedicate pages to photos of famous mothers-to-be, and also devote many column inches on mere speculation over whether a celeb is or isn't pregnant. Gossip websites and magazines are full of stories on who is pregnant this month, speculation on what they will name their baby, its due date, whether it will be a boy or a girl, what he or she will look like and so forth. Obligingly, there is no shortage of celebs expecting to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet soon. Parents-to-be in 2013 include Halle Berry, Fergie from Black Eyed Peas fame, Penelope Cruz, Katie Price, Colleen Rooney, Kim Kardashian, and most famously of all, Kate Middleton. Most aspects of celebrities' lives are pored over and analysed by journalists, with stories ranging from their relationship ups and downs, what clothes they're wearing, diets, and nervous breakdowns, but celebrity pregnancies seem to evoke much more of a response from the public than anything else in their lives. Following Beyoncé's announcement of her first pregnancy, the phrase 'Beyoncé pregnant' was the most googled term for a full week. So why are we as a nation so obsessed with the idea of celebrity pregnancies?

Celebrity Fascination

As a culture we are fascinated by fame, so when a famous person becomes pregnant it naturally spikes our interest. On celebrity forums, fans gush about how happy they are for a particular celebrity when they become pregnant and how excited they are about the baby. It seems that part of our fascination with celeb pregnancies is linked to our personal admiration for a particular celebrity; if it is one we admire we are more likely to be interested in big events in their lives.

The lives of children of celebrities are traditionally viewed as a life of privilege, which is partly why celeb pregnancy makes such big news. Children of the rich and famous will want for nothing materially speaking, and often also follow their parents into show business, making use of their family name and connections. The fact that the lives of these children can be worlds apart from children of non-famous people perhaps feeds our interest surrounding celebrity babies.

Celebrities and Our Normal Lives

Many articles in magazines however, seem to focus on how celebrities cope with pregnancy. Celebrities' bodies are scrutinised by the media and public alike. A celebrity losing or putting on weight is magazine fodder, so how famous women will look as their bodies change is diligently reported by journalists. Celebrity pregnancies are also something that 'normal' women can identify with. Pregnancy provides a common link between mothers, expectant mothers and their celebrity counterparts. It is a unifying factor between the public and the rich and famous, which explains some of our fascination with the breeding habits of the rich and famous. It shouldn't come as a shock that celebs want to have babies too, but something about seeing celebs doing normal things such as having children seems to come as a surprise, and one that if gossip magazines are anything to go by, one that we want as many details as possible about!

Another lure of the celebrity pregnancy seems to be what celebs wear while pregnant, with the emphasis on how they manage to stay super stylish while sporting an ever-expanding bump. People look to celebs for fashion tips all year round and maternity fashion is no different. With their army of stylists on hand, celebs know how to look good whatever size or shape they are! Magazines also focus on what celebrities dress their babies in once they are born. Whether to follow their trend or to deplore the idea of dressing babies in designer clothes, people love to see how celebs bring up their children!
