A Week in the News - 29th November 2013

Friday 29th of November 2013  |  Category: Pregnancy News  |  Written by:

We're back with another look at the news, this time from the last couple of weeks. Over the last couple of weeks we've seen the excitement over Comet ISON and whether or not it has survived it's dance with the Sun. We've also seen the continued debate over the economy and also immigration. These stories have been in the news for years now, but they still dominate our daily lives. Needless to say savings that we can all make on our energy bills will be welcomed, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will happen! We'll have a look at what caught our eye in the world of babies.

Childcare and Steroids

In a blog on The Telegraph Sally Peck looked at how working mothers deserve better childcare options. In turn this would help mothers to improve their career prospects. Based on findings from a Mumsnet survey, she agrees that changes should be made which will help mothers in their career without detriment to the childcare offered to the child. Obviously this is a good thing, if you want to be a mother with a career. She suggests that offering fantastic nursery care to everyone via the government is the way to go, but is this a possibility? Changes clearly need to be made in the age we live in.

Another report in the Telegraph suggests that steroid injections given to premature babies could increase the risk of ADHD. Findings show that babies who had had the steroid injections, in comparison to those who had not (but were born at the same stage of development), performed worse on average in mental health tests and showed an increase in ADHD. Now some people argue that ADHD is a bit of a 'myth', whilst others argue strongly for its treatment. But analysts are trying hard to ensure that this doesn't put parents off the injection, as they can be vitally important at such an early age.

Over-parenting, Your Second Pregnancy and Horror

Are you an over-parenter? According to this blog we're a nation of over-parenters and it is time for us to change! The blog is a look at the confusion one woman has over parents putting their children before themselves. Is it time that we change and put ourselves before our children? Molly Gunn goes into a long debate over the change that has happened with children becoming dominant in the household and how she is bucking the trend. But perhaps other mothers out there will disagree with her thoughts.

An article on The Huffington Post looks at how your second pregnancy can't compare to the first. Now this is one for mothers to debate, and us men can probably take a back seat. The blog seems to suggest that the excitement just isn't there the second time round, is this something that you found too?

Finally, and a warning before you click on the link, this story in the Daily Mail is just horrifying. Why any mother would think this is acceptable is beyond me, and it is absolutely disgusting.
