Travelling While Pregnant

So now the winter is over and the best way to get you through the last weeks of cold weather is to book a holiday! But if you're pregnant it can be a worry. Many mums are concerned that travelling may harm the baby or that they might end up giving birth in a foreign country. While there are some rules and certain restrictions for travelling while you're pregnant, as long as you plan in advance and act sensibly then there's nothing to stop you from having a wonderful time!

If you've just found out that you're pregnant, then the best time to book a holiday for is about three months time, (June, yey!) This is because you'll be in your second trimester and that's usually the best time to travel; the morning sickness should have passed and you'll be feeling more energetic and healthier than in your first trimester. You should generally avoid travelling in your third trimester if you can because of increased risk of going into labour and being uncomfortable. Also, most airlines won't let you fly after 36 weeks.

When you book, choose somewhere that won't take too long to reach. A few hours in the car, by train or plane is OK but any more than four hours and you'll start to get uncomfortable. You also don't want to travel somewhere with a completely different time zone as it may jar your body too much and you'll lose all important sleep! Think comfort, ease and relaxation when choosing your resort. A place near to the beach with lots of loungers and sun umbrellas is ideal!

Remember to check out the hotel/resort online before you commit to anything; ask around for recommendations and check reviews on the food and hygiene. Check your dietary needs will be catered for and that the place is well kept and very clean. You might also want to choose a place which speaks English well or a place where you know a little of their language so that communication isn't met with a barrier.

When you arrive, make sure you only drink bottled water and that wash all fruit well and with bottled water before you eat it. Don't eat anything if you don't know what it is! Take it easy and try to relax during your stay, sunbathing is fine just keep in the shade during the times when the sun is highest and use plenty of sunblock, (who wants wrinkles, anyway?) Nice gentle paddles in the sea or a pool is great too, but stay out of very cold or very choppy waters as this could bring on contractions.

Travelling when pregnant can be a great way of relaxing and enjoying your time before the baby arrives so enjoy yourself and don't panic or over-worry. As long as you do a bit of reading on your specific location and plan ahead you're sure to have an amazing time!
