For some couples, falling pregnant can be as easy as riding a bike. However, for others, what starts out as fun can soon become stressful when each month brings a period instead of a pink line on a pregnancy test. Everywhere you look, you see happy expectant couples or couples pushing their prams. This only adds to the stress you are feeling.

Stress is a major inhibitor for falling pregnant because it affects an area of your brain called the hypothalamus. This area controls the hormones that release your eggs. In a male, the hypothalamus is responsible for controlling the testosterone levels and so stress will have an adverse effect on him too.

The menstrual cycle can also be affected by stress. You may ovulate later in your cycle or in extreme cases, it can stop you from ovulating altogether.

It is fair to say that stress can have a negative effect on your libido, meaning that sex is the last thing on your mind as you hit the sack.

Can a holiday help?

So, how can a holiday help? Doing something that you both enjoy, which will take your minds off everyday stresses and strains and preferably alone with no children or other outside pressures, will enable you to relax and unwind. For some, there's nothing like a wide open space in the countryside or a vast expanse of beach to wash away the stresses of everyday life. Perhaps you'd prefer a spot of culture on a city break to fire up your imagination? You don't have to go far or spend lots of money, the important thing is that you relax together and take the time to reconnect. Perhaps revisiting a destination which brings back happy memories for you both to remind you why you are good together and to put a little spark into the bedroom.

Set the mood with a relaxing bath or shower together, light some candles, and enjoy a candlelit meal for two. Make the holiday about the two of you. Ideally, you should aim to be away for a week to achieve maximum relaxation and reconnection. On a holiday couples are likely to have sex most nights or every other night, whereas at home this can be once or twice a week due to daily stresses which can leave you too tired to get intimate.

Once you have decided on a destination, you need to decide on a time, so check your calendar and choose some dates when you will be at your most fertile. If you are unsure about this you can buy ovulation kits to help you pinpoint exactly when you are ovulating. To improve your chances of conception, make sure that you are making the most of your alone time and try out all those baby-making sexual positions before and during ovulation.
